Finished off "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" today with quick but effective summaries of the 7 sections. Then we moved on to Wordsworth with an introduction to "My Heart Leaps Up".

In honour of William Blake, who was both a poet and an artist we designed images today based on our own visualizations of the concepts of "Innocence" and "Experience". These images then framed Blake's symbolic poems "The Lamb" and "The Tiger" which represent "the two contrary states of the human soul". We listened to songs with lyrics that reflected the "Romantic" movement in poetry (our next unit). Though Blake was classified as a "pre-Romantic" because of when he lived, his work strongly represented Romantic thought. He was a man ahead of his time.

What an awesome day. The mouse dance presentations were awesome, and the Haggis was... challenging but many were up for the task! Now you can say you have tried the National Dish of Scotland. Finally, we began a bit of background work on William Blake. Our reading of the poem (complete with the live Tiger soundtrack) was awesome.

Reviewed "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" and "To A Mouse" while taking a moment to capture life in 2012 (to make a connection to Auld Lang Syne). Many many years from now this picture will only represent times gone by. Tomorrow is HAGGIS!!

Definitely a cold and very windy day, but we braved a visit to the Anglican graveyard on Fairview to reflect on the poem "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard". The goals were to read the poem and reflect on the 3 key themes: Death comes to both the rich and the poor. Many people never fulfill their potential and everyone wants to be remembered.

Transitioning from the 18th Century Poets (Chuldliegh, Pope, and Swift) into the "Pre-Romantics" (Burns, Blake and Gray). We spent some time working on the differences in philosophies between the two and then finished off with "Auld Lang Syne" (Robert Burns' most famous work) and discussed "cultural history". Field trip tomorrow!! Dress warmly!!
